Meditation History

The word meditation stems from the Latin term meditatum which means “to ponder.” Most approaches agree that by practicing meditation, we become more aware of how our minds work and how thoughts are connected to feelings and behaviour.

Meditation techniques can be found in the ancient Indian Vedas, at around 1500 BCE.

Here are some meditation techniques used today.

Mindfulness Meditation. This meditation takes greater emphasis on stillness, a focus on breathing, and being fully aware of the body in the present moment.

Transcendental Meditation (TM) is a meditative practice that involves the repetition of a sound, called a mantra, for 15–20 minutes at least twice a day. This moves you into a state of relaxed awareness.

Vipassana is one of the oldest Buddhist meditation practices — an awareness of what is happening, exactly as it happens.

Why is daily meditation good for you?

Meditation has numerous benefits for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Here are three compelling reasons why you should consider incorporating daily meditation into your routine:

  1. Stress Reduction: Daily meditation can significantly reduce stress by promoting relaxation and mindfulness. It helps you develop coping mechanisms to deal with life’s challenges more effectively, leading to a calmer and more composed demeanour.
  2. Improved Focus and Productivity: Regular meditation enhances your ability to concentrate and stay present. By training your mind to focus on the present moment, you become better at tackling tasks with increased efficiency and productivity.
  3. Emotional Well-being: Meditation fosters emotional regulation and self-awareness. It allows you to process emotions in a healthy way, leading to greater emotional stability and a more positive outlook on life.

Remember, the benefits of meditation often grow with consistent practice. Even starting with just a few minutes of meditation daily can make a positive impact on your overall health and happiness. Find a meditation technique that suits you best, and commit to making it a daily habit.
